Train Transfers To and From Granada Airport

Granada Airport is a Spanish airport of medium size, with passenger figures nearing or surpassing a million each year. It is an important gateway for Granada, as well as the surrounding areas, and is used by a significant number of tourists. The airport is also important for Jaen, a city about a 100 km from Granada, and for this reason, its official and full name is the Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaen Airport. The first part of the name is in honour of a famous poet from the Granada area. Although there is no Granada Airport train station available for passengers, buses are a form of public transport that run frequently to and from the airport, and the train station in Granada is useful for railway connections to all parts of the country.

Granada airport is located approximately 15 km, or 9.4 miles west of the city of Granada, and is nearby the areas of Santa Fe, Chauchina, Cijuela and Láchar. It is an airport in the Andalusia region of Spain, which is popular for its vast array of tourist attractions. The passenger terminal of the airport has the arrival and departure areas on the ground floor, and each section has a selection of useful facilities for its passengers. The airline companies of Air Europa, Iberia, Transavia France and Vueling Airlines, as well as Ryanair, who more recently joined the airport's activities, offer to and from Granada Airport flights. Although by train is a very popular and common way to travel in Spain, there is no train station at Granada Airport, and passengers who would like to continue their journey by rail will first need to reach the city of Granada. Perhaps in the future, if the airport’s passenger traffic increases significantly, there will be a Granada Airport train station.

For the transport of passengers to Granada, the Autocares José González Company provides their services, and runs frequent buses to and from the airport. Arriving passengers will mostly find that the buses’ schedules correspond to the times of the arrival flights of the airport. It is therefore important that passengers collect their baggage and then make their way to the bus stop of the airport, which can be found just outside of the main arrival hall. The airport bus travels to the bus station in Granada, and makes stops at a couple of other locations along the way as well, from where buses to all areas in the city are available. Buses do serve the Granada railway station as well. Bus tickets for the journey can be purchased from the bus driver, and will cost about three Euro.

Another way to reach the railway station of Granada is by taxi, and a taxi rank is found outside of the airport’s arrival area. There are generally always taxis available, but the information desk can call one for you if there are none available. Taxis are rather more expensive than the public bus services, especially for single travelers, but are more convenient, private and a faster way to reach the train station. Always confirm the taxi fare with the driver before leaving Granada Airport.

Granada Train Station, or otherwise unofficially known as the Andalusian Station, is located at Andalusian Railways Avenue, S/N, and has been in existence since 1874. The passenger building of the station is still the original construction, but with some additions and improvements which have taken place over the years, including the construction of the South Station. However, this is now used only for storage and workshops, whereas before, it was used as a second rail link through Moreda. The station’s building consists of three zones of similar size. There is a main lobby area, an area for customer service and the cafeteria. There are also other facilities, including the cabinet police station, which can be accessed from the three platforms of the station. All parts of the station are accessible to disabled travelers, apart from the passage between the access controls platforms used for passengers of the Altaria train services, which is done via an underpass. However, assistance for passengers can be arranged. There are also three parking areas outside the station, and buses and taxis provide further forms of transport.

From the Granada train station; with its services operated and managed by Renfe, long distance trains are available once a day to Barcelona-Sants, twice a day to Madrid-Puerta de Atocha and three times a week to Linares-Baeza. Passengers can also travel several times a day to areas closer, including Amería and Algeciras. Seville trains can be taken from Granada as well.
